The all new Effective Command Level 1 Officer course

At the end of September, Katherine Lamb and the Effective Command Canada team ran our first certified Effective Command Level 1 Officer course hosted by Mississippi Mills FD. This officer development course utilises the brand-new Level 1 officer curriculum which is designed for officer development and skill maintenance.

Mississippi Mills FD

This new course provides all students with a formative scenario and skills assessment using XVR Simulation software and the Effective Command marking criteria, and later in the week a practical scenario on the drill yard to consolidate and apply the learning.

Each student was assessed twice and their command behaviours critiqued, debriefed and developed by certified Effective Command instructors.

The feedback from the course has been phenomenal, and further course dates are being planned for 2025. This course could be delivered in any Fire Department delivered directly by the Effective Command instructors or locally by an internal training department.

This course is a must if you want to take your service from a ‘procedure-based’ organization, with rigid command roles and strict procedures, to one that is ‘objective based’ and allows competent command personnel the freedom to mitigate incidents using training, education, intuition and a flexible approach to incident command
— City of Ottawa / Ville d'Ottawa Fire Department, Training Officer
This course and its approach far exceed any other trainings/courses currently used for officer certification or development. The personal learning as well as departmental weaknesses which may be identified help create a roadmap to bettering ourselves as well as our departments
— Municipality of Mississippi Mills, Deputy Chief Officer
